Areas of Importance for the Conservation of Aves (AICAS)
Much like the Important Bird Areas (IBA) program in the United States, Areas of Importance for the Conservation of Aves (AICAS) is designed to collect information of the top conservation areas for birds. AICAS was started by a joint effort of Birdlife International and La Sección Mexicana del Consejo Internacional para la Preservación de las Aves, A.C. (CIPAMEX).
The organizations involved in this project collected data, naming 230 areas of importance. These areas represent a nice collection of the birds of Mexico:
- 1,038 species of birds (96.3% of all Mexico’s birds according to the (AOU)
- 306 of the 339 species listed as threatened in Mexico (90.2%)
- All of Mexico’s endemic species are listed
A list of AICAS can be viewed at the Conabio site.
Most of the sites are evenly distributed across Mexico, although the larger individual areas are concentrated in the southern part including the Yucatan peninsula.
As we accumulate research on these areas, we will post about each and every one of them.
