Altamira Oriole

The above Altamira Oriole (Icterus gularis) photo was taken in southern Texas, but the majority of this species range consists of Mexico and Central America.

Altamira Oriole habitat includes open areas from semi-arid to humid conditions with scattered trees as well as riparian habitat. It can be seen foraging in the trees or near the ground and it makes the longest nest of any bird in North America, a woven basket hanging from a branch. The Altimira Oriole is also the largest North American oriole species and belongs to the blackbird family, Icteridae.

Altimira Orioles are almost always seen in pairs and are thought to be monogamous seasonally and perhaps for life. It is listed as an endangered species in Texas, but is common in the southern part of its range. A truly stunning species.
